The latest programmable logic controller from Alstom's Gem 80 series - the Gem80-500 PLC - has proved a cost effective way to upgrade automation systems for Pirelli Tyres.
The latest programmable logic controller equipment from Alstom's Gem 80 series - the Gem80-500 PLC - has proved to be a cost effective way to upgrade automation systems for Pirelli Tyres, in Burton, Staffordshire.
Pirelli, which produces rubber compound at its Burton site for the group's tyre manufacturing activities worldwide, was looking for a systems upgrade to improve the performance and maintenance diagnostic capabilities on its roller/die-control system.
The roller die uses mixed rubber compound to produce the flat rubber sheet, which is then made into tyres.
Pirelli had been using controllers from Alstom's Gem80 series - which are specifically designed for automating production processes - for many years.
They were looking for a low-cost solution which provided the latest technology benefits, without having to fully replace the existing automation equipment.
Alstom supplied Gem80-500 controllers and an Alspa Communicator which meant that minimal program changes were required to the existing Gem80 control system.
Hardware and software modifications were provided by Advanced Control Systems of Leeds.
The equipment was installed and tested by Pirelli engineers over a short two-day shutdown period, which kept costs to a minimum and reduced down time and capital expenditure for the company.
Graham Wallace, Senior Electrical Engineer for Pirelli, said: "We're pleased to move to Gem80-500 controllers, giving us a common basis for our Gem80 PLCs which have provided reliable service for many years".
Mark Woods, commercial manager, Alstom, said: "Companies are increasingly under pressure to extend the lives of their current systems and to look for cost-efficient alternatives.
We've developed the Gem80-500 PLC as a low cost, flexible solution for the upgrade of our Gem80 systems, which have been used successfully in many industries for over 20 years".
He added: "The Gem80-500 is also suitable for new applications but this was one of the first times it had been used for an upgrade since it was first launched".
