Software speeds production automation
Alstom has launched a powerful, flexible programming tool for use with its range of GEM80 programmable logic controllers, specifically designed for automating production processes.
The revamp will help to improve product quality and yield.
Alstom will design the upgrade using state-of-the-art high performance controllers from its Alspa range.
The automation system, which includes process control and process management, is based on the same technology throughout One of the tandem mill's four stands will also be fitted with a new 5MW AC variable speed drive and gearbox.
To minimise plant downtime and commissioning, Alstom will carry out integration testing, and train TKS operators to use the new equipment, on a real time rolling mill simulator before installation.
The simulator will also mirror borderline case situations which cannot be tested in the mill itself, reduce downtime and help to minimise startup times.
The mill will shut down at the end of December and, after a short commissioning time, resume production by mid-January 2004.
