Software speeds production automation
Alstom has launched a powerful, flexible programming tool for use with its range of GEM80 programmable logic controllers, specifically designed for automating production processes.
PLC provides easy upgrade
The latest programmable logic controller from Alstom's Gem 80 series - the Gem80-500 PLC - has proved a cost effective way to upgrade automation systems for Pirelli Tyres.
It is designed to produce practical energy-saving solutions for industry to help offset the average 12% increase in energy bills likely to result from the imminent introduction of the Climate Change Levy.
To assist the managements of industrial companies, a joint team of specialist drive engineers from Alstom Power Conversion and City Electrical Factors is now available to undertake free plant "walk-throughs" to identify energy wastage areas.
And as a world leader in variable-speed drive systems, Alstom is well placed to provide energy cost-saving calculations and proven practical solutions.
It is estimated that 65% of all industrially consumed energy is in the control of electric motors.
Yet, for example, by introducing a variable-speed drive, a 20% reduction in the speed of a fan can reduce its energy consumption by a significant factor of 50%.
And with 50% of all low voltage motors overrated in excess of 25% a large number of manufacturing companies are simultaneously wasting both money and energy.
With the added incentive of the Government's enhanced capital allowances becoming available against the purchase of energy-saving equipment for certain applications, any system costs are indirectly reduced.
Under the Government scheme, capital write-off grants of 100% become available in the year of purchase for certain energy-saving equipment, including variable-speed drives.
This joint Alstom-City Electrical initiative also provides other tangible advantages.
These include localised supply and support through a recognised national distributor's 400-branch network; manufacturer's system training and a two-year system warranty.
