Bairds Malt, a major UK maltster supplying high quality malt products to all sectors of the brewing and distilling industries needed an automation control solution within a 5-week period.

Bairds Malt, a major UK maltster supplying high quality malt products to all sectors of the brewing and distilling industries called on Alstom to offer an automation control solution within a 5 week period.

Bairds was looking for a low cost solution to replace the existing drive which was proving to be costly and unreliable to maintain.

Alstom designed, supplied, commissioned and installed a 830kW Alspa MV3000 variable speed drive for the box kiln plant - which controls the variable combination of airflow and heat within the kilning process.

As well as the packaged drive solution, Alstom also installed a sinusoidal filter which limits the dv/dt of the inverter output voltage waveform to a level that would protect the transformer and motor insulation systems.

As part of the contract, Alstom also redesigned and supplied a ventilation scheme for the control room; this needed to take into account the high airflow requirement for the dusty environment.

Roger Bishop, Engineering Manager at Bairds Malt said: " We are very pleased with the whole installation.

Alstom were able to provide a complete solution within a 5 week period at a very competitive price".

He added: "We needed to keep the existing transformer to minimise the overall project cost".
