A new range of coloured shielding coatings, designed to be sprayed through vents and apertures, will provide an aesthetically pleasing finish where the coating remains visible
The effectiveness of any shielding coating is largely dependent on good enclosure design.
Apertures, vents, mating faces etc all need to be designed to ensure minimal RF leakage.
At the same time the design engineer is tasked with satisfying customer demand for aesthetically pleasing products.
These design parameters are often conflicting.
In practice this usually leads to apertures being masked using complex and expensive tooling, resulting in an RF 'hole' in the enclosure or the acceptance of visible coating through the apertures (conventional shielding coatings are usually copper or silver in colour).
In response to this, ACT has introduced a new range of coloured shielding coatings, designed to be sprayed through vents, apertures etc and remain undetected.
These paint systems are currently available in the following colours: Indigo Blue, Rose Red, Black and a wide range of Grey and Beige variants.
Based on silver-plated copper pigment technology, the typical sheet resistance of these coatings is < 0.1 ohms/square at a dry film thickness of 25-35 microns, providing a high level of shielding for most applications within a frequency range of 30MHz - 1GHz.
Developed using a water-based paint system, these coatings are environmentally friendly and have minimal effect on the impact strength of the substrate they are applied to.
They are compatible with most engineering polymers, including ABS, PC, PBT, Noryl etc and pass the ASTM D-3359-95a tape adhesion test.
For more difficult substrates including Polypropylene and Nylon, adhesion promoters can be applied prior to the application of the shielding coating.
Although the cost of these paints is 5-10% higher than standard silver-plated copper based formulations, cost-savings can be made in masking-tooling design and the process fall-out rate.
And of course, the integrity of the design remains uncompromised.
