Though they measure a diminutive 10mm in diameter, the new R10 family of planetary gearboxes from miniature motor and gearbox expert, Portescap, are available, as standard, in a choice of six ratios between 4:1 and 4096:1.

Gearboxes with non-standard ratios can also be supplied, and all models offer the exceptionally high continuous torque rating, for their size, of 100 mNm.

Ball bearing versions, with metal covers, are also available.

Gearbox length depends upon the number of stages, which is determined by the required ratio.

Single-stage units are just 9mm long, and have an efficiency of 90%, while six-stage versions are 26.5mm long, and have an efficiency of 50%.

A zero-backlash version will be available shortly.

An ideal complement for Portescap's recently introduced 08G series of ironless 8mm diameter motors, and also for P010 disc magnet stepping motors, the new gearboxes simply snap into place on the motor, producing a compact, yet powerful, drive unit which is well suited to a wide range of applications, including peristaltic and infusion pumps, semiconductor manufacturing plant, and security systems.

The robust, high-performance plastic material from which standard R10 gearboxes are constructed ensures that they are light in weight - single-stage versions weigh in at only 3 grammes - yet offer long life combined with virtually silent operation.

The planetary design of the units allows operation with shaft input speeds of up to 10,000 rpm, while the precision-cut gears provide exceptionally low backlash.

To ensure maximum versatility and suitability for even the most demanding applications, Portescap R10 gearboxes are bidirectional, and have a wide operating temperature range of -30 C to +65 C.

They are also suitable for intermittent operation at up to 150% of their continuous maximum torque rating.

Portescap is a subsidiary of the Danaher Motion Components Group, a part of the multinational Danaher Corporation, and is a world leader in the development and manufacture of motion control products.

These include servo motors and drives, stepper motors and drives, gearboxes, resolver and encoder feedback devices, and electromagnetic brakes and clutches.

The organisation has particular expertise in the area of precision miniature devices for applications in medicine, commerce and industry.
