Tiny precision and custom-manufactured gearboxes and motors from Portescap are playing a key role in ensuring the exceptional accuracy of Talyrond roundness and Talysurf surface measuring machines from Taylor Hobson.

These innovative machines, which find wide application in the aerospace, automobile and optical industries, are up to 100 times more accurate than conventional co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and can detect deviations from true form as small as 1 nanometre.

"When it comes to precision, there are simply no other motors on the market which match those manufactured by Portescap," said Adam Bazire of Taylor Hobson.

"A further important benefit is the high efficiency of Portescap motors, which means that they generate very little heat.

In high-precision measuring equipment, such as ours, heat is always a bogey, as temperature changes make it harder to achieve the levels of accuracy which users need." "Finally," continued Bazire, "the motors provide high output torque for their size, which makes them easier to design into our equipment.

We've used Portescap motors and gearboxes exclusively for several years, and we are well satisfied with both their performance and reliability." Portescap supplies a wide range of brushed DC motors to Taylor Hobson, extending from sub-miniature 10mm diameter models to 35mm diameter high-torque units.

The motors are used for three-axis positioning, and for controlling the motion of the gauge head along a reference bar.

Most of the motors are supplied ready-fitted with custom-manufactured gearboxes which offer exceptionally low levels of backlash, and which are manufactured to Taylor Hobson's own design, in Portescap's UK plant.

Depending on their application within the finished machine, certain motors are also supplied complete with high-resolution optical shaft encoders.

To further aid and speed the fitting of the motor assemblies into the Talyrond and Talysurf machines, they are delivered with their connecting cables pre-formed, which provides valuable savings in wiring time.

Portescap is a subsidiary of the Danaher Motion Components Group, a part of the multinational Danaher Corporation, and is a world leader in the development and manufacture of motion control products.

These include servo motors and drives, stepper motors and drives, gearboxes, resolver and encoder feedback devices, and electromagnetic brakes and clutches.

The organisation has particular expertise in the area of precision miniature devices for applications in medicine, commerce and industry.
