ABB has won a GBP 220,000 order for analysis equipment that will help improve water quality for customers throughout North-West England.

The order includes a full range of ABB's AnalyzeIT water analysis products for use at two water treatment facilities operated by United Utilities.

The facilities, at Oswestry near Wrexham and at Watchgate near Kendal in Cumbria, are being refurbished by a joint venture of water industry contractors Morgan Est and Biwater.

Two UV 254 absorption monitors and 17 off Model 4675 turbidity monitors will be installed at Oswestry Water Treatment Works.

Together, these products will be used to monitor the improvement in water quality through a new treatment process which will remove organic matter such as organic carbons from the raw water.

At Watchgate Water Treatment Works, five conductivity monitoring systems and 14 off UV 254 absorption monitors have been supplied, as well as 69 off 4670 turbidity systems.

These products form part of water quality improvements, including provision of sludge treatment facilities, to remove organic matter from the raw water and reduce the risk to 1.5 million customers of cryptosporidium, a significant cause of diarrhoeal disease in humans.

ABB's UV 254 monitors were tailored to ensure they would precisely meet the demands of the applications.

Once operational, the monitors are each expected to achieve savings through reduced maintenance and the elimination of colour reagents required by the previous colour monitoring system.

ABB's UV 254 absorption monitors provide a robust and easy to maintain solution for continuous online organic pollution monitoring and coagulation control in potable water treatment applications.
