Functional safety explained
A new guide explaining all you need to know about functional safety is now available from ABB.
Dual compartments protect temperature transmitters
The TTF350 temperature transmitter is suitable for heavy-duty applications in industries such as oil and gas, power, cement, waste incineration and chemical processing.
Customers in various process industries have selected the system because it extends the scope of traditional control systems by including all automation functions in one operational and engineering environment.
This lets plants and mills run smarter and better with cost savings because productivity and profitability improvements can be measured more effectively.
Because it is fully backwards compatible, many users have added 800xA functionality to their existing ABB systems.

Temperature sensors survive refinery environment
Each thermocouple head incorporates Type N protection of the sensor connections and nonsparking protection for hazardous zones where an explosive gas mixture is not expected, but could occur.
Electronic recorder provides easy data access
The SM1000 electronic recorder has eliminated the need for the company to sift through paper charts and has opened up new possibilities for interrogating and analysing recorded data.
Schering Plough chose the system when it upgraded its facility in Cork, Ireland, that produced Interferon Alfa-2b for treating malignant melanoma, chronic hepatitis B and C, and other illnesses.
Increased global demand for the drug meant that Schering needed to extend the plant and provide continuous production of the drug.
Mike Hennessy, Senior Project Manager, Schering Plough, said: "ABB provided a price competitive product using the latest technology which is easy to support and expand".
Cobalt producer and refiner, OM Group, selected System 800xA for batch management of speciality chemicals including cobalt.
The system uses 880 I/O points and will control the reactors on the facility's main production unit as well as the sequencing of the various production stages.
OMG's Rey Duckworth said: "With the addition of the batch package, the 800xA is a good fit for our requirements".
Ranbaxy Laboratories, which manufactures branded pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients, chose 800xA for its CLA and Cilim facilities at Dewas, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
The 800xA includes the fully integrated audit trail and batch management software that facilitates conformance to FDA regulation of 21 CFR part 11, a mandatory requirement for exports to Europe and USA.
Corus selected 800xA for its upgrade to the Scunthorpe steelwork's Queen Victoria blast furnace control system.
Neil Baldwin, Project Manager for ABB, said: "Management reporting in the new system will be much better".
"All data from the controller will be available to management staff, making it easy for them to have overall control of what the blast furnace is doing".
BP's Valhall redevelopment project in the North Sea will use ABB's safety and automation system (SAS).
Based on the 800xA, SAS is to be fully integrated with the existing ABB Advant/Master systems in the field.
By specifying 800xA, traditional control systems are expanding to include any automation component with one simple interface, enabling smarter and more efficient platform management.
