ABB engineered its products to fit the applications by supplying the standard transmitters with nonstandard mountings.

A major pharmaceutical company has ordered ABB temperature transmitters worth GBP 60,000 as part of an expansion project at one of its British manufacturing sites The project is ongoing and the total value of the ABB transmitter order will probably rise to between GBP 80,000 and GBP 100,000 once the current phase is complete

ABB transmitters are already used extensively throughout the site, following a GBP 200,000 order two years ago.

The majority of the transmitters in the latest order are ABB's TF02 Foundation Fieldbus units, which communicate with the site's plant-wide control system.

Also supplied are several bespoke assemblies based on ABB's TH02 Ex SIL2 devices for safety-critical applications.

Each TH02 unit is mounted in a specialised safety assembly alongside one of the TF02 transmitters.

Each assembly receives a split signal from a duplex temperature sensor.

One part of the signal goes to the TF02 transmitter and from there to the wider plant control system.

This helps to ensure that the measured temperature is maintained within acceptable limits under normal circumstances.

The other part of the signal passes to the HART-enabled TH02 Ex SIL2 transmitter as part of a local back-up control loop, which will bring the temperature down to a safe level if the remote control system fails to do so for any reason.

As well as the ability of the transmitters to meet the particular technical specifications required by the project, the client's decision to opt for ABB technology was influenced by the support and flexibility shown by ABB.

For example, ABB engineered its products to fit the applications by supplying the standard transmitters with nonstandard mountings.

The current expansion is a fast-track project, scheduled to take between 12 and 14 months.

Delivery of the ABB transmitters began in January.
