Industrial PC just right for Marconi Data Systems

Arcom Control Systems has signed a contract with Marconi Data Systems for the supply of industrial PCs; MDS wanted a PC which could be used as an option to run its Print Pro industrial inkjet printer
Arcom Control Systems, Cambridge - the leading supplier of communication and control technology have signed a £700,000 contract with Marconi Data Systems for the supply of Industrial PCs.
This follows on from their £3m contract win last month with Tab and Logica.
MDS wanted to source an industrial PC, which could be used as an option to run its Print Pro, Industrial Ink Jet Printer.
The printer is required to run in a variety of environments with differing applications, marking goods as diverse as timber, flooring materials, cans, bottles, flour bags, junk mail, and clothing labels.
Obviously, for the more hostile environments, an industrial specification PC would be more suitable than an ordinary desktop type PC.
The other major requirement was that it must support ISA, on a minimum of three slots.
Rob Brearley, Procurement and Quality Engineer at Marconi said "I looked at a number of so-called industrial PCs, but to be honest I wasn't impressed at the quality or cost of them.
I then looked at the Arcom APC and from the moment I saw Chris Ellis trying to lift it, I knew that there was something special in the box.
When the APC was un-wrapped it looked like an industrial PC ought to.
It was big, heavy and mean looking, with top and bottom covers fixed on with a multitude of screws.
The covers themselves were bedded down nicely on RF Shielding Gasket and the joints in the case metalwork were all welded and nicely finished.
This was the one." On both sides of the Atlantic, MDS were trying to source suitable computers.
Several were tried and failed, others withdrew the ISA support.
In the meantime, the APC itself had got MDS out of trouble on several customer sites, where alternatives had failed, so after intense system testing the Engineers at MDS decided the APC was easily capable of carrying out the tasks required "Arcom offer full support on the APC, they are local to us and they are always willing to help and improve on what we do.

It is perfectly suited for environments where standard office PC's are not rugged enough due to stringent EMC, vibration, heat, dust or other environmental conditions, yet offers the same proven hardware and software platforms that engineers have become accustomed to.
