The Micrograph Centre in ASM Materials Information has added 360 micrographs to its online collection to bring the total number of peer-reviewed images to more than 3150.

The Micrograph Centre in ASM Materials Information has added 360 micrographs to its online collection to bring the total number of peer-reviewed images to more than 3150.

Notable additions include a significant expansion of the ceramic micrographs, courtesy of contributor Richard Chinn of the Albany Research Centre.

The collection has also broadened from its initial launch that showed typical structures to include several micrographs that exemplify problems, failures or mishandled materials.

Frauke Hogue, Hogue Metallography, Pacifica Palisades, California, contributed a series of micrographs that display defects in fasteners and improper machining practices, among others.

Noted metallographer and developer of modern specimen preparation techniques Len Samuels has also contributed the classic set of samples from the 1968 Annotated Metallographic Specimens collection, which is now distributed by Metallurgical Services Laboratories .

Besides new content, the editorial review board for the micrograph centre has also replaced some images that better represent a particular microstructure or exemplify a condition.

Many images have been edited to add arrows that clearly point out the distinguishing microstructure an image depicts.

This rigorous attention to detail will continue to ensure the Micrograph Centre is not only the most comprehensive collection of micrographs, but also relevant and easy to use by those practicing the art and science of metallography.

ASM is actively seeking contributors who want to publish their work in the Micrograph Centre.

Please note all micrographs and associated descriptive information undergo peer review before acceptance.
