Artesyn Technologies has formed a new business unit to develop and market power supplies and power subsystems for wireless communications systems manufacturers.

Artesyn Technologies today announced that it has formed a new business unit, the Artesyn Global Wireless Division, to develop and market power supplies and power subsystems for wireless communications systems manufacturers.

Josef J.

Matz, managing director of Artesyn's European Commercial Division, has been named as the group's senior executive.

"Artesyn already has the resources and reference accounts to assume a leadership role in the wireless communications market," said Joseph M.

O'Donnell, Artesyn's president and CEO.

"We created the Global Wireless Division to better serve our customers aligning our practices with their business models.

The formation of this division allows Artesyn to consolidate and focus our technical and sales resources on the high growth wireless communications market.

We estimate the current power purchases in this sector to be over $1.5 billion annually." New and existing Artesyn customers will benefit from the availability of engineering resources committed to power products and technology for wireless applications.

Additionally, the Global Wireless Division will implement a "wireless system business model," offering resources and factories in North America, Europe and Asia, for concurrent, highly flexible, short-cycle-time manufacturing.

"I'm looking forward to leveraging Artesyn's experience and reputation in the wireless arena," said Matz.

"This new group will enable us to accommodate the special requirements of the wireless market space, the end result being, superior products and service for our customers." Artesyn's Global Wireless Division will be headquartered in Vienna, Austria and will leverage Artesyn's existing world-wide manufacturing capabilities.

The group will have a U.S.

design centre in Broomfield, Colo.

and a Far East design centre in Hong Kong.

European design centres will be located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Vienna, Austria.

In addition to the development of custom systems and products, these design teams will be able to leverage the company's extensive array of existing products and technologies.

Most applicable to the Global Wireless Division's charter will be Artesyn's world-class offering of DC/DC converters, front-end power supplies and experience with systems utilising distributed power architecture.

Artesyn Technologies, Inc., headquartered in Boca Raton, Fla., is a leading provider of power conversion equipment, real-time systems and logistics management for the communications industry.
