Following its acquisition of Azcore Technologies, Artesyn Technologies is launching an increased portfolio of ultra-efficient DC/DC converters.

Following its acquisition of Azcore Technologies in August this year, Artesyn Technologies has significantly extended its range of DC/DC converters, with the launch of an entirely new portfolio of high efficiency 15W modules on the world market The company is introducing three new product families - comprising 16 different models - all of which are aimed at the emergent market for powering low-voltage silicon

All these new low voltage DC/DC converters employ a technique known as synchronous rectification to provide unprecedented output current levels - as high as 6A - from such small packages, and feature some of the highest usable power densities in the marketplace.

The converters are primarily intended for the networking, telecom and wireless markets, and are also suitable for general industrial electronics applications.

Two of the new DC/DC converter families are designed for surface-mounting, the third is for plated-through hole mounting.

All three families feature a wide 33V-75V input, making them ideal for use in systems employing 48V distributed power architectures, and are available with single 5V@3A, 3.3V@4.5A, 2.5V@6A or 1.8V@6A outputs.

The two surface-mount families are also available with dual 5V@3A/3.3V@4.5A or 3.3V@3.5A/2.5V@4.5A outputs.

All the converters employ synchronous rectification to secure extremely high power conversion efficiencies - enabling them to deliver considerably more current at low output voltages than competitive products employing conventional rectification - and are rated for use in ambient temperatures up to +70sC without the need for forced air or heatsinks.

The SXE15 and SXN15 families of DC/DC converters are designed for surface-mounting and are packaged as very low profile - 0.33in - components with a length of just 1.9in, suitable for use with automated placement equipment.

SXE15 series converters use a standard SMT leadframe with gull-wing connections and a width of 1.15in, while the SXN series is packaged in a special narrow width form measuring just 1.0in across, which fits within the industry-standard 2 x 1in PTH footprint, making it easy for designers to begin migration to SMT.

The CXE15 series of converters is designed for PTH mounting; housed in standard 2.0 x 1.0 x 0.35in packages, these converters are an ideal 'drop-in' replacement for designers who wish to incorporate modern power conversion technology in existing products.

Artesyn's SXE15, SXN15 and CXE15 series converters all offer remote on/off facilities, +/-10% output adjust capabilities, non-latching clamping overvoltage protection, brick wall current limit and full continuous short-circuit protection.

The converters are rated for operation over a wide -40 to +70C temperature range, and feature full international safety approval, including EN60950 and UL1950.

According to Frank Keane, Artesyn's Director of DC/DC Marketing, "The market for low voltage, high efficiency DC/DC converters is set to grow significantly, fuelled in particular by the move towards low-voltage silicon in communications and networking systems that use distributed power architectures.

Our new SXE15, SXN15 and CXE15 series converters are specifically targeted at designers seeking a fast, low-risk entry to latest-generation technology.

The converters all share the same innovative conversion technology and have 90% component commonality.

This simplifies component sourcing and enables Artesyn to deliver quantity products on-time and on-budget - which is one of the most important issues facing designers today.".
