SimScope provides a virtual design lab for engineers to select various Artesyn products, configure input and output circuitry, set-up test parameters and then view voltage and current waveforms
The certification covers all of Artesyn's business activities in Youghal - which includes two power supply manufacturing and assembly facilities - and is a considerable accolade for the company, which is already approved to the ISO 9000 quality standard.
Most of the products that Artesyn designs and manufactures at its facility in Youghal are DC/DC converters - the company is one of the world's leading suppliers of these types of power conversion units for the computing and communications industries.
The converters are produced in very high volumes using the latest manufacturing automation and automatic test equipment, and necessarily involve the use of a wide range of industrial materials and chemicals such as primers, adhesives, thinners, solders and fluxes.
As a consequence, the need for a rigorous environmental management policy is of paramount importance both to Artesyn - which is renowned as a highly responsible employer - and to the local community as a whole.
One of the first actions undertaken by Artesyn in formulating its environmental policy was the preparation of a centralised master register of all the chemicals used throughout its facility, with details of information sources for use in an emergency.
According to John Cahill, Operations Manager at Artesyn's Youghal facility, "Gaining ISO 14001 certification is undoubtedly good PR for the company, enabling us to demonstrate to employees, customers and shareholders that we take environmental issues seriously.
But it actually goes much deeper than that, by further committing the company to good business practices.
We now have a comprehensive environmental policy which enables us to make best use of our resources, and look set to achieve significant cost-savings through the prevention, minimisation, reuse and recycling of waste materials." ends.
