Shrinking valves boost airflow

An Asco Numatics product story

New manual and mechanically operated versions of the 551 range of valves offer higher flow performance from a 25% smaller body size.

Asco Joucomatic is enabling OEMs and end users to reduce equipment costs, by providing higher flow performance (860 litre/min) from a 25% smaller body size with new manual and mechanically operated versions of its 551 (G0.25in) range of valves.

The new operators, pushbutton, lever (two- and three-position) roller and foot pedal, complement the existing range of solenoid and air operated 551 valves, providing the ultimate in control versatility from one valve series.

Designed for semi-automatic applications where either space constraints or flow requirements do not permit the use of sub-base-mounted valves, the manually operated 3/2, 5/2 and 5/3 (three positions held) 551 units are designed for use in industries such as testing, general manufacturing, work holding, glass manufacturing, food processing woodworking and many more.

The valves offer high flow to directly operate single or double acting cylinders, rotary actuators and intensifiers, or to provide pilot signals on larger equipment such as process valve actuators.

The wide range of actuators available from the 551 range, counting both the new manual types and the existing auto variants, ensures that designers/users are not called on to "mix and match" valves simply to achieve a control solution.

Included in the new manual introductions are robust inline roller valves for use in end-sensing and cam operations, substantial button (spring return or push-pull) and pedal operators, and two- and three-position lever actuators.

Both of the latter units are designed to hold position once operated, ensuring that pressure is maintained to an actuator thus reducing the risk of accidents.

Excellent operational reliability is ensured by the 551 design, which incorporates Asco Joucomatic's patented "T" seal arrangement.

This guarantees low stiction and breakaway friction even if the valve has not been operated for long periods.

The "T" seal design also means that the 551 valves are able to operate on dry filtered air or neutral gases, so there is no possibility of product contamination from lubrication.

However, "dry" operation is not exclusive as the 551 range also operates with equal levels of reliability when lubricated conventionally.

The flexibility of the 551 spool valve configuration enables 3/2 and 5/2 versions of the valves to be employed both as normally closed, or, by simply by connecting the supply to the exhaust port, normally open at rest valves.

This flexibility, plus a robust space saving design and a wide operating temperature range from -10 to +60C means that the valves are suitable for a wide range of applications, including those undertaken outdoors.
