DC motors monitor rowing machine users

An Astrosyn International Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 12, 2001

The WaterRower range of exercise machines use a V717 dc motor from Astrosyn to provide a high precision tachometer output signal to a RS-232 interface

Thanks to five-times Olympic gold medallist Steve Redgrave's unique achievement the sport of rowing has received a massive boost with more novice rowers working out than ever before.

To optimise this workout, the WaterRower range of exercise machines has been developed which simulates rowing's natural dynamics by using a V717 dc motor from Astrosyn to provide a high precision tachometer output signal to a RS-232 interface in the WaterRower computer whose sophisticated software can track distance, time, speed and stroke rate.

This successful design solution is characteristic of the informed technical expertise offered by Astrosyn for mechatronic development and rapid prototyping.

Astrosyn has recently enhanced its motion control solutions web site www.astrosyn.com to provide a much expanded source for rotating components and engineering design criteria to aid designers and specifiers in their selection of drives and motors.

Chatham-based Astrosyn are recognised as leading UK specialists in rotary technology and their ranges of performance-matched drives and controls are constantly expanding with their web-site offering a fast link to news of latest products.
