Digital drives give boost to labelling machines

Labelling machines can apply self-adhesive labels onto containers of various shapes and sizes, with high accuracy and rates of up to 120m/min, using the new fully digital drive technology from Astrosyn.

The SD180/170 range of drives, from Ever Elettronica, enable the labelling head, driven by a stepper motor, to be controlled in open loop or closed loop as a high performance servo motor.

With their enhanced DSP (digital signal processor) electronics, the drives enable self-adhesive labels to be applied from reels with high accuracy, regardless of container speed, and produce high productivity in terms of the number of labels applied per minute and the web speed.

"This labelling performance is achieved at significantly lower cost", according to Astrosyn's David Melder, "since the drives enable substantial improvements in synchronisation of the label output speed with the movement of the containers along the production line".

By detecting that speed, in fully automatic mode and without the need to change mechanical gear transmission, the containers and label web remain perfectly synchronised throughout the cycle, especially during the ramping up to speed of the carousel or conveyer transporting the containers.

The new DSP technology also enhances the performance of the motor, which, since the current is supplied proportionally to the torque required, operates at a lower temperature, with less noise and vibration at all positioning speeds.

In addition, the new drives allow the inclusion of additional functions, also at low cost.

For example, with these devices it is possible to store various parameters of the machine cycle relating to different label shapes, such as speed, start delay, stop delay, label pre-display, etc.

When changing the shape all that is required is to enter the new shape's code number and the machine is immediately ready to operate.

They can also smoothly control drives with labels and/or barcodes, with automatic reject, accident-prevention, and non-stop functions on high speed production lines.

Another important feature for labelling machines using the new drives is that it is easy to adapt the drives to different applications thanks to FieldBus/CANBus connection technology implemented in the drives.

This makes it possible to connect large numbers of labelling machines throughout the system.

The FieldBus connection provides high flexibility such that existing devices can easily control the different labelling machine accessories such as the web sensors.
