Astrosyn International Technology has delivered the first of an advanced design of permanent magnet DC motor operating at high efficiency.

The motor was developed for driving an air-conditioning compressor for a tracked vehicle.

Required for use in harsh environmental conditions, the motor has to operate in a confined space at high ambient temperatures and in a dusty atmosphere.

To meet these requirements, a high efficiency design was essential, with low losses and a low input current.

The design incorporates rare-earth permanent magnets, low-loss lamination steel and alternative designs in the windings and construction.

These features enable the 3.0kW, 28V DC motor to achieve an 87% efficiency at a rated speed of 2500rev/min and output torque of 11.3Nm.

For short periods, the motor can provide an output power of 6.0kW at 85% efficiency.

The totally enclosed fan-cooled motor is rated to IP54, and flange and shaft specifications are supplied to requirements.

As well as for use in rugged vehicles in arduous environments, the motor is expected to have applications in the rail industry.
