DC motor performs in demanding applications

An Astrosyn International Technology product story

Higher power DC motor is optimised to provide a high starting torque, as well as meeting demanding levels of ruggedness in terms of shock and EMC standards.

A high performance DC motor for use in demanding environments has been developed by Astrosyn International Technology.

The APW166 compound motor with shunt and series windings was originally designed for powering the hydraulics for lowering a heavy door on a tracked vehicle.

Previously, a permanent magnet motor had been used, which suffered from overheating, and the new requirement was for a cooler running, higher power motor that was also lighter.

The motor is also optimised to provide a higher starting torque, as well as meeting demanding levels of ruggedness in terms of shock and EMC standards.

Its highly customised design incorporates thermal sensors as well as a speed sensor with specialist electronics which is connected to a contactless relay.

Its hollow shaft enables it to be close coupled with the hydraulic pump.

Being rated to IP68, all parts are fully submersible.

Operating from an 18-32V DC supply, the motor is designed to be powered from a motor vehicle and its rugged design makes it ideal for defence and other demanding applications.
