Software integrates engineering and simulation

An Ansys product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 24, 2005

Software to streamline product development integrates engineering calculation and documentation with simulation capabilities.

Mathsoft and Ansys plan to integrate their software to streamline customers' product development.

The integration will cover Mathsoft's engineering calculation and documentation capabilities with Ansys' simulation capabilities.

Mathsoft's flagship engineering calculation software, Mathcad, will launch from within the next version of Ansys Workbench, an integrated portfolio of structural, thermal, fluid and electromagnetic simulation software.

The Workbench-Mathcad integration, available this summer, will for the first time let users automatically import Workbench data into Mathcad to drive and document engineering calculations.

This integration will open up possibilities for streamlined calculation and simulation.

The integrated software will act as a single calculation and simulation product, reducing copying, pasting, transcription and inconsistent unit errors.

For example, engineers designing an automobile airbag system will be able to import automatically Ansys-generated analysis data into Mathcad to calculate maximum inflation pressures.

"Hundreds of engineering organisations use both Mathcad and Ansys Workbench to design and analyse products prior to production", said Barry Christenson, Product Marketing Manager at Ansys.

"As two very important tools in the engineer's arsenal, it makes perfect sense that they should work in tandem - or better yet, as one - so we intend to deliver that capability with the next version of Workbench".

Workbench is a unified product development environment that offers a tight integration across a wide range of design processes, including geometry modelling and CAD editing, meshing and preprocessing, advanced analysis, robust design and shape optimisation.

It is the integration tool for advanced coupled physics capabilities that enable product design across all applications from very simple to complex designs.

The integration of these and other in-house technologies can take weeks out of the CAE process by eliminating manual file transfer, result translation and re-analysis time.

Mathcad lets engineers simultaneously design and document all their calculations.

Via an intuitive whiteboard interface, engineers can combine formulas, text and interactive graphics in one worksheet.

When it is used as a corporate standard, Mathcad ensures compliance and accuracy and reduces risk.

"This collaboration will deliver a product for our customers that streamlines engineering work and reduces the IT burden", said Mathsoft Director of Business Development, Lisa-Jean Clifford.

"That's the driving principle behind this partnership".
