Wireless Point of Location Application Services
Targa Services and Autodesk Location Services have announced an agreement that will deliver unique wireless location-based services to mobile individuals
Targa Services, a Fiat Auto company and Autodesk Location Services, a division of Autodesk, announced today an agreement that will deliver unique wireless location-based services to mobile individuals.
The companies are taking a B2B2C business strategy that involves jointly developing and distributing call center and point of location services to wireless carriers/operators who will then provide these services to subscribers.
Point of location services are personalized information systems that allow users access to location-relevant information using wireless devices.
Autodesk is already working with Targa Services to deploy wireless location-based services under Targa Connect brand that will soon be available in the new Alpha Romeo 147.
The Targa Connect services allow carriers/operators to send information directly to an in-car information system for selection of preferences and navigation.
Autodesk and Targa Services will collaborate on extending these services to users of cellular phones and other wireless devices.
"With UMTS 3G contracts costing billions of dollars, wireless operators are seeking the ultimate application to drive wireless data services.
As a platform provider of location services, Autodesk is looking for partners that develop and deliver unique applications with real customer value," said Joe Astroth, executive vice president, Autodesk Location Services.
"We believe the Targa Services solution will be one of the first wireless killer apps and will become pervasive throughout Europe and possibly other continents.
"Targa Services first chose to work with Autodesk one year ago for the deployment of their Targa Connect pilot.
Since then, their pilot has been a success and we have evolved our technology and business to capture the larger opportunity represented by wireless operators," said Edoardo Coletti, Director of Business Integration, Targa Services.
"Ultimately, our decision to partner with Autodesk was based on their proven technology and commitment to leading the location services market.
Autodesk develops, deploys and manages the technology that allows for the integration and visualization of location.
For example, when a wireless device user initiates a call to a Targa Connect operator, Autodesk Location Services technology will manage the real-time capture of the caller ID and location from a wireless network operator.
The information is rapidly displayed on a dynamic, interactive map populated with several points of interest layers.
The operator is then able to perform location-based queries, such as "Find the nearest clothing store" that correlates with the caller's profile.
Within seconds, the query results are sent back to the user via a wireless communications method such as SMS, WAP or IVR.
"The portability of real-time, location-relevant information will become a must-have convenience for mobile individuals," added Astroth.
Autodesk and Targa Services Market Advantage Over the last five years, Autodesk has provided technology that leverages location as a key element to telecommunications customers worldwide including AT and T, Sprint and Telia.
Additionally, Autodesk has a proven track record for building successful partner channels and developer networks.
And, only Autodesk offers a development platform that integrates wired and wireless applications to fit the way people work and live.
The Autodesk Location Services provides all of the technology underpinnings needed to quickly develop and deploy market-ready point of location applications.
Leveraging Autodesk's core technology strength in mapping and location analysis, the development platform is built from the ground-up to meet the specific requirements of wireless communications.
The platform's communications-centric architecture provides the ability to handle high volumes of transactions per unit of time; support for real-time data communication; and adaptability to a wide assortment of end-user devices, including mobile phones, PDAs, and laptops.
The Autodesk Location Services solution is capable of handling an unlimited number of transactions while making it easy for developers to add additional functionality to existing applications.
