German locomotive maker switches to 3D CAD
Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik has purchased 50 licences of Autodesk Inventor Series high-performance 3D mechanical software.
Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik has purchased 50 licences of Autodesk Inventor Series high-performance 3D mechanical software for the design and manufacture of its locomotives and intends to make the transition to designing exclusively in 3D.
Vossloh, a leading European manufacturer and supplier of diesel-hydraulic and diesel-electric locomotives used by railway companies in Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia, Austria and other European countries, chose Autodesk Inventor software for its large-assembly performance, ease-of-use and compatibility with AutoCAD software.
"We chose the Autodesk Inventor Series because it contains Autodesk Mechanical Desktop as well as Autodesk Inventor software, allowing us to continue to work with our AutoCAD-based drawings, while at the same time migrating to the new Autodesk Inventor 3D technology without any risk", said Herr Proehl, CAD Manager at Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik.
"In addition, our mechanical designers liked the ease-of-use, the large assembly performance and the excellent visualisation capabilities of Autodesk Inventor".
To design its locomotives, which feature a sophisticated modular design and high-quality components, Vossloh needed a software solution with exceptional large-assembly performance, ease-of-use, and visualisation capabilities.
The company also needed a solution that would allow quick and easy transfer of its many existing AutoCAD-based drawings and files between AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor software.
The Autodesk Inventor Series helps Vossloh avoid costly redesigns while reducing overall cycle time and cost.
"Vossloh locomotives are used on railroads throughout Europe, and they must be designed and manufactured to meet all the appropriate safety regulations", said Robert Kross, vice president of the Manufacturing Division at Autodesk.
"The outstanding visualisation capabilities of Autodesk Inventor let customers like Vossloh create large assemblies and then view exactly how a machine functions before starting the production process.
This not only helps cut production time and costs but also ensures that each locomotive meets the industry's rigorous safety standards".
