Design software models sub-sea equipment

With the help of Imass CADLogic and Autodesk, Technip Offshore UK is testing the power of Autodesk Inventor Series to work with huge data-sets of around 4600 unique files Technip, based in Aberdeen, provides sub-sea engineering and construction services, assets and products to the offshore oil and gas industry and is using the 3D manufacturing design software to model its pipelay vessels and other equipment installed on the seabed
According to Bill Ross, Technip Drawing Office Supervisor: "Inventor is coping well".
He adds that without Inventor it would be a lot less efficient, and definitely more costly, to model these exceptionally large assemblies in a commercially viable way.
Ross and Technip Drawing Office Manager Alistair Stephen explain that they have been working closely with both Autodesk reseller partner Imass CADLogic - and Autodesk itself - to get the best out of their software and hardware when modelling these vessels and their vast range of sub-sea equipment.
"We recognise that we are pushing the boundaries, but Imass CADLogic has always been very responsive and we are also working directly with Autodesk product developers in the USA, mainly to ensure our hardware can handle the sheer volume of data produced", said Stephen.
They are now also investigating Autodesk's data management solutions to help them manage and share all the information created, taking advantage of their reseller's expertise in this area.
Ross continued: "Inventor also ensures a good workflow".
"We use Autodesk DWF file formats to exchange the model and related data with our engineers".
"This enables them to view our work and comment without changing it, so we keep control of data integrity".
Technip Offshore UK is part of Technip, a European engineering and construction company with a global workforce of over 20,000 people and with manufacturing plants and construction yards in every major oil and gas region in the world.
The UK drawing office has been using Inventor for around two years, having first considered Pro/Engineer and SolidWorks".
""We were introduced to Inventor at an Imass CADLogic open day".
"We had been using AutoCAD for around 20 years so certainly felt comfortable with the Autodesk name, but we also found Inventor very user-friendly and easy to learn", said Stephen.
Imass Design Solutions acquired CADLogic Scotland in September 2005 and now looks set to become Autodesk's largest UK manufacturing solutions reseller partner.
It plans to combine its thorough experience and knowledge of manufacturing CAD and data management with CADLogic's specialist knowledge of CAD in the oil and gas industries.
Part of Imass, Imass Design Solutions is a provider of design software, consultancy and training for engineering and manufacturing companies.
It is one of Autodesks top tier UK partners operating in the manufacturing sector and extends the value of Autodesk's manufacturing design software with discipline-specific applications such as Alias piping solutions, Ansys finite element analysis, Schafer structural steelwork, SPI sheet metal, MSC motion analysis, Cyco asset management, Empressa product lifecycle solutions and Navisworks collaboration tools.
In particular, it has in-depth knowledge and experience of data management solutions to help customers maximise their investment in design by managing and sharing data effectively across the entire operation.
