Access control specialists the Atlas Group has been granted a full UK patent for its 'sticky wheel' magnetic drive system.

The success of the patent application comes as the first products using the unique magnetic drive system are being installed.

This achievement is the culmination of over two year's research and development by the Slough-based Atlas Group.

Atlas developed products using the system include the Jo-Line rising steel line barrier, a gate automator and a high speed rising bollard.

Employing the principle of magnetic attraction to 'stick' a drive wheel to an armature plate - the 'sticky wheel' principle - the drive system has a number of distinct advantages over conventional fixed drive systems, especially with regards to safety.

The benefits include torque-limited drive transmission and conditional freewheel.

With the first product installations now well under way, Atlas is busy investigating other applications where magnetic drives could advantageously replace conventional fixed drives.
