CitectSCADA to control Gothenburg port functions

Beijer Electronics has secured an order from the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden for a CitectSCADA system to control and monitor essential functions.
The Port of Gothenburg's intention is to utilise the super-ordinate CitectSCADA system to build a shared, integrated, supplier-independent industrial control platform.
At present there are a number of different branded control systems, serving various operations and applications.
Some of the functions CitectSCADA will manage wholly or partly are entry and exit control, lighting control, alarm management of ramps and cranes, monitoring energy consumption, monitoring loading/unloading of oil and estate monitoring.
The platform will also be enabled for future opportunities to integrate parts of system security and digital CCTV.
The progressive integration of such a range of functions at the Port of Gothenburg will also be made easier by the clustering feature included in the latest versions of CitectSCADA.
Normally, the I/O point count for any conventional SCADA system controlling such a range of functions would be large, necessitating splitting the system into definite sections.
However, this approach is unwieldy, expensive and difficult to integrate.
With a clustering approach, organisations also have the ability to utilise the same configuration for a project multiple times and have the configuration automatically duplicate for each cluster.
This ensures simpler and faster scaling-up of systems.
It also means that once one project has been tested, duplication of this project ensures roll-out of any number of systems without having to test each of those duplicate systems.
In terms of operator interface, this also means that the operator would then be able to see one display page on-screen driven by different clusters at different times, based on the operator's command.
The first stage of the Port project involves preparing a platform for the various parts of the operation based on a sector-specific framework developed by Citect partner, Beijer Electronics.
The next stage is to start implementing various elements.
An integrated industrial control system will be operational within a five-year period so that effective resource staffing can control multiple systems from a single centrally placed function.
In addition to control systems, an array of real estate and ERP systems will be compatible with CitectSCADA.
The actual design process will be structured so that current and future control systems for the various businesses can be seamlessly integrated.
This will also create the right preconditions for some functional integration between parts of the underlying systems.
