Antimicrobial film used in nurse call systems

A MacDermid Autotype product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 20, 2009

Antimicrobial film from MacDermid Autotype is being used in a range of Medicare nurse call systems to ensure the devices meet the stringent hygiene standards demanded by hospitals.

In addition to its antimicrobial functionality, the Autotex AM film combines durability with the ability to be embossed, making it ideal for the systems' control panels, manufactured by MTM Products.

Medicare Systems develops radio nurse call systems for care homes and hospitals in addition to a range of infection control equipment for the NHS.

As the company's equipment is predominantly used by the elderly and the vulnerable, it is important that its products offer a high level of protection against infectious bacteria and cross-infection.

When looking for a manufacturer to produce the embossed control panels for its plastic nurse call systems, Medicare Systems approached MTM Products in Chesterfield.

MTM Products investigated a number of film substrates for the control panel before settling on Autotex AM from MacDermid Autotype.

Autotex AM is a hard-coated polyester film that has been developed for applications such as membrane keyboards, fascia panels, wall coverings, shelf and bench tops, where durability and antimicrobial protection are key.

The film offers a tough, high-quality durable, textured and tactile surface, making it the ideal touch surface for nurse alarm control panels.

Additionally, the second surface of the film offers an ink adhesion primer, which enables the control panels' graphics to be printed directly onto the reverse side of the film.

The antimicrobial quality of the film is due to Microban technology, which is built into the textured hard coat during manufacturing.

This ensures an even distribution of the antimicrobial agent throughout the texture and film surface.

This Microban element continuously fights the growth of harmful bacteria on the film's surface, disrupting the key cell functions of bacteria and other micro-organisms that come into contact with the surface of the film, preventing microbes from functioning, growing or reproducing.

Tests carried out on Autotex AM by an international laboratory proved the film substrate kills a range of bacteria, fungi and moulds, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes.

In addition to this antimicrobial protection, the Autotex AM film allows MTM Products to incorporate embossed buttons into the design of the control panel, and provides a consistent low gloss, textured surface, making the alarms easy to use.

The film is also scratch and chemical resistant, enabling it to withstand everyday use and rigorous cleaning.
