Bombardier Transportation has chosen Accuride slides for the fleet refurbishment of Mk IV coaching stock.

Accuride International's high quality telescopic ball-bearing slides are used in a variety of industries and can be found in many unusual places Train carriage interiors can now be added to this list, as Bombardier Transportation has chosen Accuride slides for the fleet refurbishment of Mk IV coaching stock

Until recently, the pneumatic door control units of the Intercity Mk IV coaching stock were situated in a boxed area within the toilet compartment, resulting in severely restricted access for installation, repair or maintenance activities.

Accuride slides have changed all that by enabling the units to be moved to a far more accessible area on the exterior wall of the toilet behind the passenger seat.

As Ian Johnstone, Key Account Manager for Accuride explains: "The simple inclusion of our slides has revolutionised access to the control system in around 270 carriages currently undergoing a multi-million-pound refurbishment for HSBC at Bombardier Transportation's Wakefield site".

The inclusion of a disconnect system within the slide allows the user to remove and retrofit a complete control unit within minutes an excellent solution that should reduce downtime considerably.

This is a major consideration for GNER, the operator of this fleet on the Kings Cross to Edinburgh East Coast main line route.

The good news doesn't stop there.

Bombardier was able to use a standard Accuride product that required no additional bespoke engineering to provide a cost effective solution and, in turn, reduce maintenance and repair time considerably.

Due to the success of these installations Bombardier has used the same approach on its pneumatic control units for dividing doors, again benefiting from the smooth movement of the slides for easier installation, repair and maintenance.

Accuride hopes that the principle behind this application will prove to be of interest within the wider railway industry and, of course, throughout the Bombardier group as a whole.
