The availability of essential electricity supplies for hospitals and schools in Congo and Zambia is now being enhanced with the help of a new TDR2000P cable fault locator from Megger.

The versatile and robust instrument was supplied to Central Africa Missions at the specific request of one of the organisation's senior engineers, Gordon McKillop.

"We wanted a Megger instrument because we need total reliability", said McKillop.

"All of the equipment we use when working in developing countries has a very hard life.

For example, the roads are poor, so even before they are taken out of the toolbox, meters are subject to high levels of shock and vibration.

And, of course, repairs or replacements are virtually impossible to arrange".

"Our previous experience with Megger equipment has shown that it can handle tough conditions without problems", continued McKillop.

"When we needed a cable tester, therefore, we knew that Megger would supply a product we could depend upon".

The TDR2000P supplied by Megger to Central Africa Missions is a time-domain reflectometer which can accurately locate the position of a cable fault up to 16km from the point where the instrument is connected.

Not only does this mean big time savings, compared with traditional methods of fault location, it also virtually eliminates the need to dig up buried cables for visual inspection.

Further benefits of the TDR2000P include weatherproof construction as standard, the ability to operate from either rechargeable or primary batteries, and a comprehensive built-in help system which means that, even if the operating manual is not conveniently to hand, full instructions for use are readily available.

The instrument supplied to Central Africa Missions will be used in checking and commissioning new installations throughout Zambia and Northern Congo, as well as for maintenance and fault-finding on both mains-supplied and generator-fed systems.

It is expected to be an important aid to ensuring the continuity of power supplies to the vital institutions supported by the missions.
