Tester checks electrical safety on ancient warship

A Megger product story

The Mary Rose Trust uses the latest PAT4 portable appliance tester to carry out checks on all of its portable electrical equipment.

To help ensure that the highest possible levels of electrical safety are maintained, even for team members who are regularly required to work in wet environments, the Mary Rose Trust - the charity responsible for conserving Henry VIII's famous flagship in Portsmouth's historic dockyard - has chosen the latest PAT4 portable appliance tester from Megger to carry out checks on all of its portable electrical equipment.

"We have, in fact, used Megger equipment for many years", said Glenn McConnachie, Conservation Manager for the Mary Rose Trust, "and we've always been impressed by its reliability and performance.

When we needed a new instrument to cope with the increased volume and variety of testing that we now have to carry out, Megger was, therefore, the logical choice of supplier".

Of particular interest to the Mary Rose Trust are the facilities which the PAT4 offers for testing power tools and other equipment designed for operation from 110V supplies, and the instrument's ability to store test results for later downloading and incorporation into printed test reports, which greatly speeds up the production of records, as well as eliminating the risk of transcription errors.

Also important to the trust is the fast startup offered by the instrument, which is ready for use just 5s after being turned on, and its straightforward operation which, unlike many other portable appliance testers, does not require the use of complicated codes.

The compact, yet robust, construction of the instrument also weighed in its favour.

"Our new PAT4 is certainly being kept busy", said Glenn, "as the trust uses a surprisingly large amount of portable electrical equipment.

We have, for example, computers, cash registers, portable lighting equipment and laboratory-type instruments, as well as the power tools, which we use in our restoration work.

All of this equipment has to be tested regularly, and the results properly documented.

The PAT4 makes this task, which used to be very time-consuming, quick and easy".
