New accreditation expands safety services offered

An AV Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 5, 2008

AV Technology's range of UKAS-accredited services has been expanded to include safety assessments for all categories of machinery covered by Annex IV in the Directive.

AV Technology (AVT) has been appointed as a notified body for the Machinery Safety Directive (98/37/EC), following official confirmation from the DBERR (Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - formerly the DTI).

The Directive applies to all machinery and safety components and defines a machine as "An assembly of linked parts or components, at least one of which moves".

Clearly this definition encompasses a very large range of machines, from simple hand-held power tools through to complete automated industrial production lines.

AVT's Technical Director Neil Parkinson said "The accreditation is the culmination of extensive work carried out by our engineering staff and will enable us to expand our current range of UKAS-accredited services to include safety assessments for all categories of machinery covered by Annex IV in the Directive".

"Although the majority of machinery may be self-certified by the manufacturer (or their authorised representative within the EU), this is not the case for Annex IV machines".

"The Annex contains a list of 17 types of machine subject to special procedures and includes sawing machines, presses, injection moulding machines and roll-over protection structures".

"Machines in this list must either be manufactured fully in accordance with the provision of the relevant type C standard, or they must be subject to a type examination by a notified body".

"In either case, a copy of the technical file for the machinery must be lodged with a Notified Body before the CE mark is applied".

"This work complements AVT's current international services relating to noise assessments as laid down by the Outdoor Noise Directive, but also involves assessments of many other areas of compliance, not related to noise or vibration".

"It will allow us to offer new services to existing clients while in parallel opening up extensive business opportunities for new clients around the world".
