Johnson takes on research

An Advanced Design Consulting product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 20, 2002

Eric Johnson has been named vice president of research at Advanced Design Consulting.

Eric Johnson, whose interest in music translates well into engineering, has been named vice president of research at Advanced Design Consulting, a consulting firm for engineering projects in Lansing.

With more than 20 years of engineering experience with IBM, Johnson's work included studying finite stress analysis, shock and vibration control, acoustical research and performing thermal analysis.

He served as a manager in both development and manufacturing.

While he worked extensively with customers, Johnson was also a lead engineer on some projects and a consultant for large systems, disk drives and microelectronic packaging.

"Eric Johnson has brought extensive technical management experience to the management team, particularly in modelling and project management", said Alex Deyhim, ADC's president.

"Eric has a strong understanding of complex technical issues and is capable of developing a clear and organised project plan".

Johnson, who lives in Greene, NY, earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University at Buffalo (formerly the State University of New York at Buffalo) in 1977.

He earned his doctorate in applied acoustics from the University of Salford, Lancashire, England in 1982.

Johnson's thesis focused on violin acoustics and he obtained a mathematical simulation of violin dynamics, as well as the nonlinear feedback relationship between the bow and the string.

He used holography to determine mode shapes in the bow-string relationship, which was information applicable later in his work on finite element analysis.

Additionally he has taught classes in finite element analysis for IBM and he has taught music acoustics at Binghamton University (formerly SUNY Binghamton).

Johnson has authored a chapter in the book "Principles of electronic packaging" (McGraw-Hill, 1989).

He has been a volunteer in the Boy Scouts, Little League and youth soccer.

He is a professional member of the Orchestra of the Finger Lakes.
