Machine safety seminar set for Salford

A British Automation and Robotics Association product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 7, 2005

BARA will hold its next machine safety seminar at Salford University, Manchester, on 18th January 2005.

The British Automation and Robotics Association will hold its next machine safety seminar in the Harold Riley Suite, situated in the University House on the Peel Park Campus at Salford University, Manchester.

This will take place from 1000 to 1530 GMT on 18th January 2005.

It is aimed at managers and engineers responsible for machine safety within their work environment, designers of safety control circuits, and those responsible for ensuring that machinery meets current safety regulations.

Dr Richard Piggin, Chairman of BARA's Safety SIG (special interest group), comments: "The feedback received from delegates after the first two Warwick seminars was extremely positive, but we are aware that there are many people further North who would prefer to attend something closer to home".

"We have therefore arranged to run the seminar in Salford, but with the same formula of classroom sessions and illustrations of the principles as applied to automation cells".

John Madden, Principal Inspector from the Health and Safety Executive, will discuss machine safety standards and legislation.

When he spoke at the last BARA seminar, the lively and detailed discussion that ensued was one of the highlights of the day.

Other seminar sessions will be led by experienced experts from industry, with time available for questions and answers.

Starting with an introduction to CE marking and PUWER, the seminar will go on to show how to apply the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive to an automation cell, and how to comply with the most commonly encountered EN standards.

Risk assessment methods will then be discussed, and guarding standards considered.

In addition to the structured sessions, the seminar provides an opportunity for delegates to discuss specific problems with experts from several leading suppliers of automation and machinery safety equipment.

Piggin says: "Delegates from the first two seminars told us that they liked the coverage of guarding, robots and Category 3 and 4 applications".

"John Madden's talk in the second seminar was enormously popular, so we are very pleased that he will be speaking again at the forthcoming seminar".

"In addition, the package of legislative and standards information has been widely appreciated".

The cost of the seminar is just GBP 60 per delegate when booked prior to the event (GBP 50 for BARA members), which includes a buffet lunch, light refreshments and seminar material.

As before, places are strictly limited, so register quickly if you are interested in attending.

Registration forms can be downloaded from the events section of the BARA website.
