The British Automation and Robot Association (BARA) 2008 machine safety conference will take place at Bletchley Park on 30th September.

The conference is run in association with Drives and Controls and sponsored by the Laidlers, the Health and Safety Executive, IET, IMechE and MachineBuilding.net.

The conference focuses upon the practical application of functional safety.

An overview of machinery safety standards, covering current and emerging standards, will be given by the HSE.

The HSE will also provide a standards update on power drive systems and robotic standards.

Speakers will discuss various technologies supporting functional safety and will examine practical application through case studies.

Sessions will include safety-related control and networking.

The conference is aimed at specifiers and designers of machinery and safety-related electrical control systems, as well as managers and engineers responsible for machinery safety.

Speakers will include the HSE, Rockwell Automation, Proctor Machine Guarding, Pilz, Schneider Electric, Sick and system integrators.

Delegates will also get an opportunity to take a guided tour of the site of Britain's codebreaking activities during WWII and the birthplace of the modern computer.

There will be an opportunity to see a fully working, rebuilt version of the Turing Bombe, the machine that was used to crack the Enigma codes.

The Bombe, which remained a secret for almost 50 years, was recently commissioned and is now operational.
