The aim of Baumer electric in the development of the PosCon sensor was to reduce the cost of carrying out position monitoring and to return to the proven simple handling of optical sensors.

Until now, it has only been possible to carry out applications such as measuring fabric breadths, monitoring the position of threads or wires, or positioning fabric edges by using technically demanding and cost-intensive line or matrix based vision systems The aim of Baumer electric in the development of the PosCon sensor was to reduce the cost of carrying out these tasks and to return to the proven simple handling of optical sensors

In the development of these new line sensors, therefore, special attention was paid to keeping both operation and mounting very easy.

The sensor fulfils these requirements and is much more compact and less expensive than previous systems.

Operation and handling A sensor should be simple to operate.

It should be possible to put it to work without using a PC or similar aid.

If anything has to be set up, this should be possible without any fuss.

On the other hand, all functions should also be available via an interface, to achieve the maximum possible degree of automation.

Our PosCon comes very close to this ideal picture of the sensor with the points which are listed here: * There are 3 standard measuring ranges.

30mm 150mm and 350mm, for each measuring range, there is a reflector or reflecting foil of the correct size.

* 3 different measurement types can be set on the sensor using a button, edge (left or right), Centre, and Width (edge to edge or total area), in addition two limits can be "taught" using the Teach button, for use as tolerance limits for the switching output.

* At 50 x 50 x 22 mm, the sensor is so compact that it is very easy to fit anywhere.

* All functions to be carried out using buttons can also be operated via an RS485 interface, and the sensor maintains all settings even when powered off.

Because of the lighting principle, the PosCon is able to recognise translucent objects (e.g roughened glass or foil, translucent plastics) with no problem or additional cost.

Even transparent objects can be recognised with the polarised version.

In this way it is possible to measure even the edges of transparent objects without major restrictions.
