Nuno Carvalho gave a presentation on the effect of hydrogen content on the super low friction of diamond-like carbon coatings during the 50th Anniversary Tribology Conference.

Nuno Carvalho, R and D Project Manager at Bekaert DLC, gave a presentation on the effect of hydrogen content on the super low friction of diamond-like carbon coatings on Wednesday the 12th of July during the 50th Anniversary Tribology Conference organised by the IMechE.

During his presentation, he clarified how tests have repeatedly shown that coating parts with Bekaert's Dylyn Plus can reduce engine friction by up to 30% in the valve train system.

The coating also improves the wear resistance of the coated component, thus extending its life time and contributing to reduced engine fuel consumption and emissions.

He illustrated how the hardness and low coefficient of friction of DLC coatings form a particular combination that has proven to avoid different types of engine failure.

At the same time, Bekaert strives to perfection its product by optimising the entire tribological system.

The coating design should be part of the development process.

Basically it's a necessity to make sure that the surface properties are optimised in the perspective of being coated.

The counterpart and the lubrication are other focal points Bekaert wishes to examine in order to achieve a more complete grasp on the benefits of DLC coatings.

Bekaert continues to invest in laboratory test setups, whilst learning from their experience and know-how gained from the racing applications.

For Bekaert, the iMechE 2006 Tribology Conference proved to be a unique networking opportunity amongst peers from industry and academia.

The multidisciplinary forum for automotive engineers, lubricant scientists, materials technologists and tribologists, offered them all a platform to discuss the present and future developments in the surface engineering and tribology of engines and drivelines.
