Two-axis positioning with voice-coil actuators

A BEI Technologies product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 9, 2001

BEI Kimco Magnetics has a two-axis precision positioning system using a direct linear magnetic drive based on voice coil actuators which achieves sub-micron positioning with 50g+ acceleration rates

At the 2001 Drives and Controls Show, BEI Kimco Magnetics will be demonstrating an example of a two-axis, precision positioning system using a direct linear magnetic drive based on voice coil actuators.

It achieves sub-micron positioning with acceleration rates of 50g or more, significantly increasing the throughput of industrial processes.

Voice coil actuators are available in a range of displacements up to 100 mm, and with force capabilities of up to 1100 Newton.

The direct drive technology eliminates rotary motors, gearheads and leadscrews and has infinite resolution without hysteresis, cogging or detents.

Used extensively in the semiconductor industry for wire-bonding, inspection or packaging machines, this direct drive technology is now successful in an expanding range of applications in medical, factory automation and electro-optical equipment.

A complete range of brushless DC motors incorporating drive electronics will also be on display.

BEI Kimco Magnetics is an operating division of BEI Technologies, Inc (Nasdaq: BEIQ).

BEI is an established manufacturer of electronic sensors and motion control products used for factory and office automation, medical and scientific equipment, military, aviation and space systems, and transportation equipment including automobiles, trucks and off-road equipment.

The company's product portfolio includes optical encoders, brushless DC motors, voice coil actuators, potentiometric position sensors, silicon microelectromechanical (MEMS) devices, rotation rate sensors, pressure transducers, and servo systems.
