BEI Technologies has released the next generation of its patented NCAPS noncontact angular position sensor.

BEI Technologies has released the next generation of its patented NCAPS noncontact angular position sensor.

This latest version features a new application specific integrated circuit developed exclusively for NCAPS.

By consolidating over 100 discrete electronic components, the new ASIC has enabled a significant reduction in the overall package size and cost.

The NCAPS ASIC will enable BEI to combine low production costs with high accuracy to meet the growing demand in multiple sensor markets including automotive steering sensors and advanced stability systems.

NCAPS is a true noncontact absolute position technology patented in 2002 by BEI Technologies to provide a high-resolution yet cost effective rotary position sensor.

Initially developed for steering angle applications, NCAPS is also ideally suited to a wide range of applications in a number of other markets including heavy equipment, marine, instrumentation, industrial automation and robotics.

The ASIC-based device is rated to meet the rigorous environmental demands of both the automotive and off-highway markets.

NCAPS has already achieved impressive early success by being specified in electro-hydraulic steering control systems for a major European customer.

NCAPS offers an extremely clever adaptation of inductive transceiver technology using digital signal processing techniques.

The sensor configuration uses a combination of well proven and durable materials in a thin package size (less than 8mm).

It features mechanical memory at startup providing absolute position.

The new device also offers a continuous self-diagnostic function and is a noncontact sensor measuring angular position over a full 360-degree range with +/-0.5% absolute linearity.

BEI's sensors are used extensively in advanced vehicle stability control systems, and the company has seen significant increase in demand for its products as automotive safety systems have become more complex.

The company is currently transitioning to its next generation of automotive inertial quartz based sensor products, remotely mounted multisensor clusters with CANbus and a multirate sensor package suitable for incorporation into electronic systems modules.

Along with the NCAPS system, BEI also manufactures seat-memory modules, throttle position sensors, seat belt tension sensors, and other devices used in transportation systems.
