Beru F1 Systems has developed a dual tyre pressure measurement system.

Beru F1 Systems has developed a dual tyre pressure measurement system Made for the harsh and competitive Nascar oval racing series, Digi Tyre DT can accurately measure the tyre pressure and temperature of outer tyre and inner liner mounted on a single rim

With a small air gap between the two, it was impossible to install a conventional system but different electronics packaging and new battery technology that will last the entire season have made the breakthrough feasible.

Generating massive cornering loads, Nascars race at speeds over 320km/hr and run two tyres on each rim to prevent a puncture causing a major accident.

"To date it has not been possible to measure accurately the critical air pressure between the two tyres," says John Bailey, Beru F1 Systems Managing Director.

"Monitoring pressure not only offers both safety and performance advantages to the user but also allows the teams to optimise tyre wear and vehicle handling characteristics".

The temperature and pressure data will provide further information for engineers, tyre manufacturers and drivers to increase performance.

The technology is transferable to applications other than Nascar, even outside of motorsport.

"We are already working on OEM, military and nautical programmes," said Bailey.

"We believe there are many scenarios where somebody wants to measure accurately air pressure in a restricted space".

To solve the packaging problems, engineers redesigned and reduced the sensor and electronics package so that it can be fitted on the outside of the wheel rim, sitting flush with the rim edge, thus eliminating the risk of it becoming dislodged when the Nascars are running in their usual close formation.

With unsprung weight also being critical, Beru F1 Systems re-evaluated the materials to get the weight down to 33g.

Eliminating any redundancy, both installations mount on existing wheel rims.

To complete the software that will allow teams to make the most of the data available, the firm approached 2005 SCSA Champions Team West-Tec, who is providing a car for static and dynamic testing.

Digi Tyre DT includes features from the current Digi Tyre product such as the ability to replace wheels without having to recalibrate the system, lightweight wheel electronics and an integrated accelerometer-switch to extend battery life.

Optional wireless, portable diagnostics tools are also available for analysis in the field.
