World-leading specialist in electrical test and measurement equipment Megger has invested in advanced spray nozzle technology from Bete.

The investment will enable Megger to further enhance its capability to develop sophisticated test and measurement solutions for the electrical industry, in applications such as insulation testing, cable fault locating, protective relay testing, and power quality testing.

For over 100 years, Megger has been the premier provider of electrical test equipment, and today delivers a full service solution to meet the precise test and measurement requirements of individual customers.

As a critical element of its advanced assembly process, Megger must ensure the precise application of liquid flux within its wave soldering system, to rid component surfaces of oxides and other contaminants, and create surface tension conditions conducive to optimum solder flow.

The company is also committed to using a VOC (volatile organic compound) free flux within its operating system.

A VOC-free flux can dramatically reduce the level of deposition during the wave soldering process, that can otherwise lead to the production of substandard equipment, as well as being a potential source of pollution.

Traditionally, the solution has been applied in a bath of liquid flux, however this can leave a significant amount of flux residue on the completed assembly, which then requires cleaning.

As a result, Megger researched alternative methods of application, and found that spraying a VOC-free flux provided the ideal solution.

Spray fluxing ensures precise control of the amount of flux applied to each assembly, to dramatically reduce the level of deposition occurring within the process and lower operating costs by reducing the overall amount of flux required.

Once the decision was made to utilise a spraying system, Megger began a full evaluation of the alternatives, and after extensive research, found that Bete PJ nozzles provided the perfect solution.

The nozzles are designed to spray a homogenous fog into the process - at an atomisation level perfectly matched to VOC-free fluxes - to deliver complete spray coverage, together with a consistent spray pattern, both critical elements of Megger's operation.

An advanced one-piece nozzle, the PJ provides high-energy efficiency and delivers the finest fog of any direct pressure nozzle - with a high percentage of droplets under 50 microns.

Combining its small size with super-fine atomisation, the compact nozzle contains no whirl vanes or internal parts, offers a 0.125 or 0.25in male connection and an optional 200-mesh screen or 10 micron paper filter.

The PJ delivers a cone-shaped fog pattern with a 90-degree spray angle, and flow rates from 0.0580 to 5.34 litre/min.

The system has proved a resounding success and, as a result, Megger is already planning further PJ installations.

"Bete's has delivered exactly what it promised, a highly efficient solution, performing to our precise specifications", commented Chris Warner, Process Engineer at Megger.

Warner continued, "Coupled with a first-class product, Bete has also provided unsurpassed levels of support, accessibility and reliability, which enables us to offer the best possible service to our customers.

Bete has proved itself invaluable to Megger, and we are confident the company will meet our requirements for the foreseeable future".
