BHR Group's 11th International Symposium on "Aerodynamics and ventilation of vehicle tunnels" will be held in Luzern, Switzerland, 7th-9th July 2003.

The safe operation of road and rail tunnels is never far from the thoughts of the transport industry and this is demonstrated by strong international support for the latest conference on the subject.

BHR Group's 11th International Symposium on "Aerodynamics and ventilation of vehicle tunnels" builds on the success of previous events by bringing together many of the world's leading experts to share and present the latest applications and developments in this important field.

More than 100 original papers have been offered for presentation at the symposium.

This event follows a highly successful meeting in Boston in 2000 where delegates were able to see work on the "Big Dig".

The Swiss authorities have ambitious plans for longer, deeper Alpine tunnels and, after a number of serious incidents in the region in the last four years, it is fitting that the symposium should return to Europe in 2003.

The symposium will consider the full range of issues facing tunnel engineers, from the high level issues of planning, cost and safety to the practicalities of assessing, maintaining and upgrading existing ventilation systems.

With emphasis on applications in road and rail, the symposium aims to cover all aspects of tunnel design and operation by focusing on the principles governing physical behaviour, design objectives, analysis and validation.

Topics to be covered include general tunnelling principles and design objectives, road tunnel systems design, road vehicle design, railway tunnel system design, railway vehicle design, tunnel design solutions, practical and management issues, and analytic techniques and validation.

The event will also feature an open session to raise and discuss key questions and future developments in areas such as automation, modelling, smoke control, thermodynamics, pollution, smoke extraction and the environment.

The symposium is designed for everyone involved with tunnel ventilation including tunnel operators, project engineers, road and rail vehicle manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, mining engineers, government agencies, systems integrators, universities and other research organisations, consultants and construction companies.
