The latest environmental sensor from Lufft is the R2S radar-based precipitation sensor which uses a 24GHz Doppler-radar to measure the speed of rain or snow fall.

Precipitation amount is calculated by correlating drop size and speed.

The device is maintenance free as there is no build up of dirt on moving parts to affect correct operation.

It can differentiate between rain and snow, and provides adjustable resolution from 1 to 0.01mm.

The sensor has a digital RS425 interface, with two digital pulse outputs, and can provide a compatible electronic replacement for "tipping bucket" type rain gauges.
