Brook Crompton has received a US $1 million order to supply nearly a hundred 50kW traction motors for the mid-life overhaul of the monorail at Newark Airport, New Jersey, which can carry 2700 passengers an hour to and from one of the busiest air terminals on America's Eastern Seaboard.

The facility, built in 1996, was the first fully automated monorail to serve an international airport, and all the original trains were fitted with Bull DC motors from Brook Crompton.

In 2001 the system was extended by a mile to the north to provide a direct connection to New Jersey Transit and Amtrak trains, and again Brook Crompton was the sole supplier of traction motors.

The new motors are being made by Brook Crompton's Blackheath factory in England and will be dispatched across the Atlantic in small batches over the next several months to tie in with the project timetable in Newark.

In charge of their manufacture is Engineering Manager Steve Hurley, who says: "We looked at refurbishing the existing motors, as they still have plenty of life left in them, but decided to replace them as this is the best way to take full advantage of all the latest advances in motor technology".

"Ultimately by having a consistent motor design for the entire system, life-time cost of ownership will be low".
