Composite fairing is a combined effort

A Brookhouse Holdings product story

The combined expertise of both Brookhouse Composites and Brookhouse Patterns of Darwen, has been used to produce a specialist composite fairing for an aerospace wind tunnel.

The wind tunnel was used for various aerodynamic modelling applications and to increase its operational performance and to improve its characteristic airflow, it was decided to fit a fairing to the main fan.

This was to be attached to a central flange on the fan but as access to this flange was difficult, it was realised that a lightweight, composite, two-part fairing would be required, which could be easily manhandled into position inside the tunnel.

A sketch of the proposed fairing was supplied to Brookhouse and from this a wooden pattern was manufactured in Brookhouse's extensive pattern shop.

The pattern was then used to produce the two glass-fibre, half moulds, using the wet lay-up method with subsequent oven curing.

The two glass-fibre half components were then produced from the moulds, again using wet lay-up and vacuum bag oven curing.

The finished parts were provided with the necessary holes for bolting to the fan flange and they were pinned together after fitting inside the wind tunnel.

The Brookhouse Group offers a total capability in composites engineering, from the manufacture of tools for composite components to the design, production and assembly of composite components themselves.

Much of the company's composites expertise is used in the aerospace industry, while it also finds application in the automotive and general engineering sectors.
