Vision system keeps record of conformance

A Blue Diamond Technologies product story

Multi-sensor, coordinate vision system can quickly and accurately inspect and measure engineering components to maintain quality control on volume production.

Southampton-based engineering company Blue Diamond has invested in a vision system so it can quickly and accurately inspect and measure engineering components.

The goal was to maintain quality control on volume production.

The multi-sensor, coordinate vision system supplied by Baty will measure complex engineering components in many different materials.

By comparing the measurements obtained from the component with the dimensions and tolerances on the engineering drawing, the software produces a detailed report showing any dimensions that are outside the dimensional tolerances.

The documentation produced is used to confirm to the customer that the components being supplied meet the intended specifications and all the data is archived allowing the specifications of individual batches to be traced.

Paul Brian, Engineering Director at Blue Diamond, said: "We supply components in a range of sizes and materials and needed a machine that could give us the flexibility and adaptability to measure cast parts, machined components and plastic mouldings".

"The machine supplied by Baty is based on a camera vision system, and fits our needs perfectly".

"It will measure very small components or bigger parts up to 600 by 400mm in a range of materials".

The system has dual monitors - one to display the live image and the other to show the engineering drawing of the component.

The software with edge detection tools recognises all types of geometric features such as threads and radii, making it quick and easy for the operator to complete the inspection routine.

The machine is easy to set up and use requiring just a few hours on-site training.

A further benefit for Blue Diamond is that the system can be used to create 2D engineering drawings by simply scanning an existing component.

This is particularly useful if the part has been re-engineered, the drawings have been lost or damaged, or drawings are not available in electronic format.
