RTS Innovation has been awarded a three-year framework agreement by British Nuclear Group for design and engineering work on the mixed oxide fuel facility at Sellafield.

RTS Innovation, a subsidiary of International Nuclear Solutions (INS), has been awarded a three-year framework agreement by British Nuclear Group (BNG) for design and engineering work on the mixed oxide fuel (MOX) facility at Sellafield.

The agreement is expected to be worth approximately GBP 8 million over the three years.

Last month's creation of INS from the nuclear services division of RTS, has resulted in the formation of the only pure nuclear services company listed on the London Stock Exchange and one of the largest nuclear engineering companies in the UK.

Although framework contracts have been used by BNG to reduce costs and to provide value for money for some time, this is the first time in recent years that such an arrangement has been entered into for an individual business within the Sellafield site.

INS will use its expertise to provide direct support to 30 ongoing MOX engineering projects.

Working with 100 BNG engineers, the INS team will provide proof of concept, detailed design, manufacturing and works testing for each of these projects, all of which are dedicated to enhancing the MOX facility.

A BNG spokesman explained: "By using the same experienced contractor for all our existing projects, we expect to improve the quality of design and, by eradicating the learning curve, speed project delivery, saving both time and money".
