Motor upgrades Xerox printer performance

A Bodine Electric Company product story

Developers at Xerox Corp designing a paper feeder for the Docucolour 2060 had to alter their plans rather late in the process.

They originally intended to use the same kind of motor as employed throughout the transport system of the 2060.

Problem was, it couldn't deliver enough power to run the blower that was central to the air system in the feeder.

A more powerful brushless DC motor and amplifier package from Bodine Electric Company, Chicago, was pressed into service.

The Type 34B4BEBL/FV is a 0.2hp device that pulls 8A at 36V when at full load and speed.

It is designed to be part of a closed-loop speed-control system, accepting a PWM speed signal from a remote controller.

It supplies a tacho pulse output for speed feedback.

The Bodine motor hits a top speed of about 1600rev/min in the blower application.

This allows it to generate enough fluffing force to separate even relatively heavy paper from a paper supply.

The control system decides on a blower speed based on paper weight and size, paper type (coated or uncoated), and on the altitude at which the system operates.

Early versions of the system used an amplifier module that was physically separate from the motor.

The integration of the motor and control package on the Bodine unit made the whole system less susceptible to problems both from electrical noise, and from accidental damage during service.
