Ford dealer boosts compressed air
quality
One of Britain's largest family owned Ford main dealers has massively boosted its compressed air provision to provide for expansion and to maximise the quality of its body shop output.
One of Britain's largest family owned Ford main dealers, Paynes Garage of Hinckley, has massively boosted its compressed air provision to provide for expansion and to maximise the quality of its body shop output The fast-growing paint-shop needed substantially more totally dry clean compressed air for its air tools and spraying facilities, but there was also growing compressed air demand from the accident repair workshop as business increased
The company's existing and ageing body shop compressor could not cope and was no longer able to supply the quality that ever-increasing customer expectations required of the paint shop.
Paynes Garage already had experience of Boge compressors, because local distributor Manton Compressors had supplied a Boge screw compressor for the truck and car workshop some three years earlier.
So John Davey, dealer principal at Paynes Garage, contacted Dave Manton to ask his advice about the body shop.
Manton, with Mike Heely of Boge Compressors, carried out an air demand audit at Paynes Garage, measuring both peak air demand and average air demand.
Manton Compressors recommended a new installation for the body shop and accident repair departments consisting of two Boge SD24 rotary screw compressors running in a master and slave configuration under a Boge MCS controller.
The controller ensures that the roles of master and slave compressors are switched each week to equalise the hours each compressor runs.
When air demand exceeds the output of a single compressor, the controller automatically brings the second unit in to boost the compressed air supply, allowing it to revert to standby when air demand falls.
Each 18.5kW Boge SD24 screw compressor, operating at 8bar, delivers 2.8m3/min, which comfortably provides for average air demand and more, thus preventing too many unnecessary brief startups by the slave compressor.
When routine maintenance is necessary, the controller can also call upon the former body shop compressor, which remains installed and operational and able to provide extra compressed air as necessary.
A key benefit of the Boge SD24 screw compressor for body shop use, where dry air is so important, is that the SD range incorporates a substantial and very efficient refrigerant compressed air dryer within the compressor.
This saves space and ensures constantly dry air.
A full set of three Boge compressed air filters is installed externally, so that the air from either of the new compressors, or from the original body shop compressor, is thoroughly dried before it goes to the spray guns and air tools.
It was essential to Paynes Garage that the new compressors emitted as little noise as possible, because the garage backs on to an area of residential housing and the compressors are located outside the building.
The company already knew, from its existing machine, that Boge screw compressors emit very little noise, and has found that the new compressors are virtually inaudible from the houses opposite.
John Davey, dealer principal at Paynes Garage is very pleased with his company's acquisition.
