As part of a company-wide cost-reduction strategy, Carleton Furniture Group is on track to making significant cost savings with its compressed air system from Boge Compressors.

Carleton Furniture Group specialises in the provision of commercial, educational, residential and kitchen furniture solutions.

At its manufacturing facility in Pontefract, compressed air is used to power a number of important processes including powering the timber plant machines, the tube-bending machines and the airlines for fettling.

As part of the energy-efficiency strategy, Alan Bennett, the manufacturing and design director at Carleton Furniture Group, has been reviewing all areas of energy consumption.

Most recently, this included calling on local compressed air supplier Boge Compressors for advice on the existing compressed air system.

In order to assess the energy efficiency of the existing compressed air system Boge performed a comprehensive site audit.

This exercise demonstrated the amount of compressed air being generated over an average period of time next to the actual amount required.

The results suggested that by replacing the existing compressors with energy-efficient versions Carleton Furniture Group would save more than GBP18,000 per annum.

These savings were based on installing an S15 screw compressor along with the SLF40 frequency controlled screw compressor for this application.

The Boge SLF series combines a direct coupled drive system with frequency control to provide the ultimate compressor for pressure control under variable output requirements.

The SLF is therefore a low-carbon technology that works strictly in accordance with the compressed air demand by producing the exact volume of compressed air at the pressure required.

Frequency control minimises idling time and evens out air demand fluctuations.

Carleton Furniture Group chose to proceed with Boge's recommendations and funded the new compressed air system with an energy-efficiency loan from The Carbon Trust, a loan designed to provide the SME business with interest-free money to fund replacement equipment with cost-saving energy-efficient technologies.

A Boge SLF40 and a Boge S15 screw compressor were subsequently installed.

In order to verify the savings after installation, Boge conducted a post audit.

The results proved to be even better than predicted, demonstrating that Carleton Furniture Group was set to save more than GBP22,000 per annum with its compressed air system.
