Modems make the link for sea-level data

A Jekyll Electronic Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 14, 2006

Telemodem2 industrial modems enable the Tide Gauge Inspectorate to provide close to real-time data of the height of the sea at 44 locations around the UK.

Thanks to the unique powering and reliability of the Telemodem2 industrial modems from Jekyll Electronic Technology, the Tide Gauge Inspectorate (TGI), based at the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory in Merseyside, is able to provide close to real-time data of the height of the sea (mean sea level) at 44 locations around the UK.

This gives vital information regarding sea levels and acts as an early warning system for sudden surges and so avoiding breeching flood defences along the East Coast of England and in the Netherlands.

The Jekyll modems relay this tide height information every 15 minutes for use by the Met Office, harbour masters and researchers.

What has made the Jekyll Telemodem2 Freedom the modem of choice is the fact that it does not need any external power.

The modem just needs to be plugged directly into the telephone line, so there's no need to worry about batteries or mains power.

"This was particularly important", explains Darryn Gaudie, Researcher at the Tide Gauge Inspectorate.

"Many of the sites where these monitors and modems are situated are in very remote and very harsh environments, often extremely close to the sea itself".

"The Jekyll modems are extremely reliable, which is a good thing as we wouldn't want to visiting Wick or Lerwick on a regular basis".

"Any problems we do have, and its inevitable that some do occur, Jekyll engineers deal with them quickly and efficiently and once repaired that's it, all is okay again".

The Telemodem2 offers data transfer rates up to 2400bit/s, remote setup and diagnostics for online maintenance, an industry standard 25-way D data port connector, and CTR/21 compliance for use throughout Europe and beyond.

In fact, there are currently systems installed in the South Atlantic and Mozambique for vital tsunami warning systems.

As the TGI provides the sole source of information for tide height around the UK, it is vital that the modems are reliable and continue to work even during the harshest of conditions.

The information collected by the gauges and relayed via the Jekyll modems saves hundreds of acres of land being flooded in the UK every year and the measurements contribute to the raising and lowering of the Thames Flood Barrier.

For any application that needs reliable transfer of data, from even the remotest of areas, without the need for external power or the use of batteries, the Jekyll Telemodem2 is the perfect solution.
